Uterine Fibroid Embolization Package

Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) : Using interventional radiology techniques, the interventional radiologist occludes both uterine arteries, thus reducing blood supply to the fibroids.

Procedure :

1. After skin preparation with antiseptic solution, a local anesthetic is administered to numb the skin at the groin.
2. The Interventional Radiologist will make a small nick in the skin and thread a thin tube into the femoral artery.
3. X-ray guidance and periodic injections of radiographic contrast material are used to map the blood vessels.
4. The catheter is threaded into the uterine artery.
5. Particles of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) are injected into the uterine artery and blood flow to the fibroids is blocked.
6. Because fibroids are very vascular, the particles flow to the fibroids and cannot travel to other parts of the body.
7. Once one side is completed, embolization is performed on the other side.
8. The procedure takes approximately 60-90 minutes.

Uterine Fibroid Embolization is not recommended for women with :

1. Asymptomatic fibroids
2. Allergy to radiographic contrast
3. Suspicion of cancer
4. Renal insufficiency (serum creatinine > 2 mg/dL)
5. Infection or pelvic inflammatory disease
6. Pregnant women
7. Women who wish to have more children

The package price for UFE is 127,800 Baht for normal patients and 148,000 Baht for those with minor complications. The package includes :

1. Angiography procedure
2. All equipment used during the procedure
3. Medication needed for the procedure
4. Doctor fees
5. Standard room for 2 nights.

Effective date - December 31, 2007

The package does not include :

1. Diagnostic tests, e.g. MRI, laboratory tests
2. Any blood transfusion needed during and after the operation.
