The Facts

  • Overconsumption of sodium can cause your kidneys to work extra hard
  • There are 10 million Thais living with hypertension, that is 1 in 6 of the entire population
  • Thais on average consume up 7,000 Mg. of sodium per day
  • If you have hypertension the amount of sodium consumed should not exceed 1,500 mg. per day

Recommendations to Limit Excess Sodium Consumption

  • Eat foods containing natural ingredients
  • Maintain a healthy diet filled with fruits and vegetables
  • Eat foods rich in potassium i.e. beans, bananas, oranges, and milk
  • Drink milk  and eat yoghurts that are low fat or fat free instead of cheese
  • Try to eat fresh foods and avoid processed foods such as pizzas, bacon, and hot dogs
  • Read the label for nutritional information (choose foods low in sodium)
  • Taste food before adding condiments such as salt or fish sauce
  • Use natural ingredients and spices instead of salt or fish sauce
  • Cooking and flavoring your own food can help to control the amount of sodium you consume
  • Avoid canned foods and ready-to-eat meals
  • Stay hydrated
