About Urinary incontinence

Urinary incontinence (UI) is the inability to hold urine until reaching a toilet. It is a common disorder, afflicting millions of people throughout the world. It is more commonly found among the elderly, and is more likely to afflict women than men. UI is diagnosed by a complete physical focusing on the nervous system, reproductive organs and urinary samples.

Although relatively common with older people, UI is not an inevitable consequence of aging. It is usually a sign of an underlying problem related to the disease or the result of certain medications. Women are more prone to UI during pregnancy, childbirth and after the onset of menopause.

There are many types of UI, but the most common are stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence generally involves involuntary loss of urine while coughing, sneezing, or physical activity. Urge incontinence applies to the inability to hold urine until reaching a toilet. It is often associated with diseases like diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, bladder infections, or multiple sclerosis.

Treatments for UI include the following:

  • Behavioral therapies designed to help patients regain control of their bladder
  • Pelvic muscle rehabilitation
  • Medication
  • Surgery where the UI is caused by correctable structural problems such as an abnormally positioned bladder
  • Modifications in the diet, including eliminating caffeine and alcohol

The Incontinence Clinic at the Bangkok Hospital Medical Center is here to help. If you are suffering from UI, please contact our clinic today for a complete diagnosis – more often than not, the condition can be corrected.
