Stroke Program

The Stroke Program at Bangkok Hospital Medical Center (BMC) is known for its comprehensive and compassionate approach to patient care and is leading the way in preventing, diagnosing and treating stroke with state-of-the-art technology and medications combined with a personalized patient-focused approach to healthcare. Stroke is always a medical emergency, and quick, decisive and expert medical attention is crucial. At BMC, we provide every patient with the best possible treatment options and the highest quality of care from our multidisciplinary teams of specialized physicians.

Inclusion criteria

  1. The patient is above the age of 18.
  2. The patient is within 7 days of the onset of a suspected or diagnosed cerebrovascular accident, e.g., ischemic stroke, transient ischemic attack or intracerebral hemorrhage.
  3. The patient is displaying at least one of the following symptoms: sudden weakness or numbness of the limbs, notably on one side of the body; slurred speech; trouble seeing in one or both eyes; severe headache.
  4. The patient does not plan to undergo an operation following diagnosis.
  5. The patient is not comatose, semi-comatose or using a ventilator.

Program procedure

  1. The BMC team immediately applies its combined expertise to determining whether the available range of advanced treatments can benefit the patient.
  2. The patient is quickly assessed by one of our expert neurologists who are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  3. The treatment program
    • Extensive diagnosis is undergone utilizing computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, carotid duplex and transcranial Doppler.
    • Advanced treatment options are explored, e.g., the use of a tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), which can reverse stroke if applied to carefully selected patients within three hours of the onset of a stroke.
    • Prevention of complications such as deep vein thrombosis, aspiration pneumonia and bed sores.
    • A comprehensive rehabilitation program is commenced.
    • Counseling of the patient and family members to provide guidance on lifestyle and environmental changes that will support and enhance recovery.
  4. Our multidisciplinary team of neurologists, nurse coordinators, clinical pharmacists, nutritionists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists work in concert to provide comprehensive care for our stroke patients.
