Acute Coronary Syndrome Program

Numerous factors can cause the sudden onset of chest pain. Chief among them is Acute Coronary Syndrome, which results from coronary occlusion or an insufficient blood supply to the heart muscle. ACS is a leading cause of death, and anyone who experiences warning signs should seek lifesaving emergency medical treatment.

This program has been established to ensure the proper care of patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome by providing optimal treatment and fast reperfusion therapy.

Inclusion criteria

Patients displaying any signs of chest pain or discomfort are eligible for this program and should present themselves at the hospital within 24 hours of experiencing symptoms. The pathway begins in the ER, OPD, or the general ward if the chest pain persists, and is initiated by the attending physician or nurse. Associated symptoms:

  1. are often described as pressure, squeezing, burning or tightness in the chest.
  2. usually start in the chest and radiate out to the rib cage.
  3. may extend to the arms, shoulder, neck, jaw, throat or back.
  4. may feel like indigestion.

Exclusion criteria

  1. Patients with traumatic chest pain or musculoskeletal chest pain.
  2. Patients who sign themselves out or refuse treatment against medical advice.

        Program procedure

  1. The patient’s chest pain is assessed utilizing a tracking tool.
  2. An electrocardiogram is taken within 10 minutes of arrival.
  3. Blood is tested for cardiac markers.
  4. The patient is seen by a specialized physician as soon as possible.
  5. Appropriate treatment is administered.

In cases of STEMI

  1. A primary PCI will be performed within 90 minutes, provided there are no contraindications.

  2. A preventive program will be arranged by our multidisciplinary team of pharmacists, physiotherapists, nutritionists and heart specialists.

  3. Data will be collected from performance measurements and analyzed to continually improve treatment methods.
