Congenital
heart disease occurs in around 1% of newborns or asymptomatic
adults. Certain types of congenital heart diseases must be treated in early
childhood without delay, whilst certain types are asymptomatic allowing
treatment to be postponed until later on in life. The most common congenital
heart diseases are atrial septal defect (a defect in the wall separating of the
right and left upper heart chambers), ventricular septal defect (a defect in the
wall separating the right and left lower heart chambers), abnormal
inter-connection of blood vessels and many other types which can be surgically
corrected.
